Forester Owners Speak Out!

Aao_forester

What was the main reason you bought a Forester?

We ended up falling in love with our 2007 Forester because of the safety and reliability, and also because of its great utility.

- Forester Owner

What was the main reason you bought a Forester?

Safety: I've never felt as safe in any other car as I do in my Forester. Although I've been fortunate enough never to have been in an accident in it, I feel that based on all of the research that it not only will help me avoid some accidents, but also that if I do get in to one, I'll be well protected. Handling/Performance: The AWD on my Forester kicks the butt of the 4WD on my Wrangler... at least for everyday driving in all of the rain and snow I have in my area! Also, I live at a very high altitude (10,200 feet), and it seems to have little effect on the power of my 2008 Forester Turbo (automatic). I love it! Culture: Much like the Wrangler owners, Subaru owners have their own little culture. I can't tell you how many times I've run in to fellow Subaru owners and they just go on and on about how many Subaru vehicles they've owned in the past and how much they've loved them. I've had a number of people come up to me at gas stations, etc., and want to check out the car and talk to me about it.

- Forester Owner

How much room is there in a Forester?

The new Forester has improved rear leg room by just over 4 inches. I'm 5'10" and fit comfortably back there. They have also redesigned the rear suspension to allow for more cargo space in the back. Because of the new suspension they were able to reduce the size of the wheel wells within the vehicle. Getting four 30" suitcases shouldn't be a problem. I know I could fit that in my Outback now, and it has less cargo room.

- Forester Owner

What can you pack in your Forester?

Dogs are the main thing (besides people, of course) that end up in our Forester. I've already had to do some interior repairs to the ceiling liner - thankfully, not because of the dogs, but the man who fixed them seemed to think that Subaru is just one of those brands for dog people... I can't disagree, we have four and they love to stick their heads out of the sunroof!

- Forester Owner

What can you pack in your Forester?

We haul lots of stuff: three big dogs, camping gear, fishing gear, horse tack/items, musical instruments, mountain bike, snow shoes, hiking gear.

- Forester Owner

What was the main reason you bought a Forester?

The biggest reason for my first Subaru purchase was Northern New York winters. Near Lake Ontario we can get 3"-30" of snow in a matter of hours, winter driving can be dangerous and the weather can change in a heartbeat. I can honestly say that I feel safe and secure when driving my Subaru, whatever season it is.

- Forester Owner

How much room is there in a Forester?

I am only 5'5", and my husband is maybe 5'9", so there is plenty of room for us. My brother-in-law (6'1") was here last week and spent the whole time riding around in the back seat. He seemed fine, no complaining, and we did a few road trips.

- Forester Owner

How much room is there in a Forester?

A critical factor for me was the front leg room, since I am 6' 5" tall and have had back surgery. I found the Forester to be very comfortable. I cannot speak to the rear leg room since I only plan on putting my dog in the back. As far as cargo room goes, I think the Forester has ample space. I ride a bicycle a lot and like to carry it in the vehicle. The Forester more than handles my bike and all related equipment.

Defensive Driving Rule #1: Pay Attention!

Pay-attention

"I never saw him!" is the most common excuse heard after a collision. Was the other vehicle invisible? Virtually all collisions involve inattention on the part of one or both drivers. Inattention can involve many things, some of which are daydreaming, distractions, sleepiness, fatigue, "highway hypnosis," talking, etc.

A moving vehicle develops thousands of foot-pounds of energy. YOU as a driver have the responsibility not to use that energy to injure or kill others, or damage their property. Paying attention makes it possible for you to see, recognize and avoid the hazards lurking on the road; these are the three basic elements of defensive driving. The primary attribute necessary for a safe driver is alertness, and paying attention is the most important driving task because it helps create the time you need to recognize hazards and avoid a collision.

One statistic often quoted is that most collisions happen within a short distance from home. Why is this true? Since we mostly drive in our own neighborhoods, the odds are we'll have most of our mishaps there. Close to home we get more comfortable and perhaps let our guard down (and the other guy does the same thing); you've heard that "familiarity breeds contempt?" Better yet, familiarity breeds inattention. We don't often consider that serious or fatal injuries can occur in low speed collisions.

I have a challenge for you. While it is important for you to be alert and aware, it isn't an easy task. The next time you drive, try concentrating solely on the driving task. Think of nothing else. Then see how far you get before your mind wanders. Many drivers won't even get out of the parking lot! Seasoned drivers don't HAVE to think about driving much. It's something we do automatically, and our minds are free to wander. And our minds WANT to wander. Have you ever driven somewhere and been so lost in thought that you couldn't remember anything about the trip itself? Is this a problem?

Is this a curable problem? Paying attention can become a habit, but you have to work at it. Make conscious, persistent choices NOT to eat while driving, or whatever you do that takes your attention off where your moving vehicle is pointed. Connect your mind to your eyes and work at consciously analyzing what you see while you drive. We call this "situational awareness." Driving is the most dangerous thing most of us ever do. It deserves your full attention. Mastery of this one habit can almost make you bullet-proof. Not quite, but almost.

Safety for your family and protection for the environment are only a few reasons Subaru is the right choice for your family.

2011-10-12_1209

Subaru owners are unique individuals. They are well rounded life enthusiasts who make their buying decisions based off several key elements. These elements include Safety, Reliability, Cost, and residual benefits for both the environnment and even their own local community.

Subaru was named the ONLY automaker with IIHS Top Safety Picks for All Models - TWO YEARS IN A ROW (2010 and 2011)! People think of safety as the ability to survive an accident. But, the best way to deal  with an accident is to do your best to avoid having one in the first place! . Subarus are equipped with a broad range of safety features and systems to protect you. These innovations not only help the driver avoid a collision with the use of Active Safety features, they also help occupants survive one through the use of Passive Safety features. It's what makes a Subaru, a Subaru and Subaru of Keene the preferred destination.

Symetrical All Wheel Drive makes a BIG Difference

All-wheel drive isn't unique, but Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is. Notice how the left and right sides of the drive train are in balance - like a butterfly or an airplane. This balance is unique to Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel drive and ensures stability and its efficiency at transmitting power ensures greater grip and quick response to slippage. Providing more than just safety on slick roads, it delivers intensified performance on any road.

Four Wheel Drive Vehicles are not one in the same.

4-channel, 4-sensor Antilock Disc Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) - Working in conjunction with the 4-channel, 4-sensor ABS, EBD maximizes stopping power by optimally apportioning power front to rear under heavy braking. So you're better equipped to stop when you need to stop. Standard on all Subarus.

Daytime Running Lights (DRL) - Studies have shown that DRLs have helped reduce fatal and nonfatal collisions between oncoming vehicles by about 5 percent and fatal collisions between vehicles traveling in the opposite direction by about 23 percent. Most insurance companies offer discounts on vehicles with DRL. Standard on all Subarus.

4-wheel Independent Suspension
The Subaru 4-wheel independent suspension makes sure you're ready for any driving condition. Its low-friction design and specific spring and shock absorber tuning help keep the four wheels in contact with any road surface, paved or unimproved, making the most efficient use of All-Wheel Drive. Because each wheel functions independently, unexpected dips and bumps are no problem. The suspension easily absorbs road irregularities, so each tire stays right where it belongs - on the road. Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC)
Standard on all 2010 models, this stability system helps keep you on your intended path by measuring variables such as steering input, braking, and vehicle angle. Sensing any slide that causes the vehicle to deviate from your intended course, VDC applies individual brakes and / or reduces engine power to help counteract the slide and help keep you safely in control. How cool is that!

Click here  to see how Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel drive compares to competitors!

Accidents happen but the vehicle you drive can decrease

the chances of your having one!

IMPACT PROTECTION

It's a fact of life, accidents happen. Almost 50% of drivers will be involved in some form of an accident throughout their lifetime. Subaru will lessen the chance of those accidents ocuring and in the event they do, Subaru will make certain your family is as safe as possible and without harm.

space Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Body Structure [STANDARD] - A Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Body Structure helps protect the driver and passengers in the event of an accident. Comprised of higher-strength steel, the Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Frame, dual side-impact door beams (which help prevent intrusions into the vehicle), and front and rear crumple zones (which help redistribute impact energy away from the driver and passengers) combine to offer an exceptionally safe environment.

Height-adjustible 3-point Front Seat Belts with Pretensioners and Force Limiters [STANDARD] - A safer seat belt makes for a safer car. That's why Subaru vehicles come standard with height-adjustable front seat belts that feature pretensioners and load limiters, which respectively tighten the belts on impact and release the belts slightly to help reduce stress on the torso.

Energy-absorbing Collapsible Steering Column [STANDARD]
In the event of an accident, the steering column is designed to absorb energy and minimize force impact by collapsing toward the front of the car. This helps to reduce chance of body injury to passengers.

Safety Brake Pedal System
The pedal assembly is designed to yield in a moderate-to-severe frontal impact, helping to reduce injury to the driver's lower limbs.

Height-adjustable Active Front-seat Head Restraints - In the event of a rear-end collision, the active front-seat head restraints provide another layer of protection. They automatically move forward to cradle your head to help minimize the possibility of whiplash.

space Subaru Boxer Engine Placement [STANDARD] - Designed with breakaway sheer bolts on the engine mounts, the low placement of the Boxer engine inside a Subaru helps minimize engine intrusion into the passenger cabin.
space Seat-mounted Front Side-impact Air Bags (SRS)+ Mounted on the front seats, they provide protection regardless of your ideal seat position. Designed to protect both your head and torso, they helped the Forester achieve the highest possible rating in all Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash tests.

Subaru & the Environment

Subaru offers the most fuel efficient All-Wheel Drive vehicle lineup in America. Subaru also offers Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (PZEV) certified Legacy, Outback, and Forester models which are available for sale anywhere in the U.S. Subaru PZEV vehicles meet California's Super-Ultra-Low-Emission Vehicle exhaust emission standard.

space
  • Subaru PZEV vehicles have 90% cleaner emissions than the average new vehicle.
  • Gasoline vehicles meeting PZEV emissions standards sometimes have even lower emissions than hybrid or alternative fuel vehicles.
  • Subaru PZEV vehicles achieve such tight pollution controls, and the burning of fuel is so complete that in very smoggy urban areas, exhaust out of the tailpipe can actually be cleaner than the air outside.
  • According to the EPA, Outback, Forester, and Legacy are among the cleanest and most fuel-efficient vehicles available in the U.S. based on air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and overall fuel economy.
  • Outback, Forester, and Legacy are honored in the EPA's Green Vehicle Guide.

The Subaru Clean Plant Subaru manufacturing plant in Lafayette, Indiana (SIA). The Subaru plant was the first auto assembly plant to achieve zero landfill status - nothing from its manufacturing efforts goes into a landfill. It's all reused and recycled. Therefore, when you purchase a Subaru you have peace of mind in knowing that your purchase not only protects your family but plays part in protecting the environment for future generations!

Caring for Subaru Turbocharged Engines

PROTECT YOUR TURBOCHARGED SUBARU VEHICLE WITH THESE RECOMMENDED BASIC OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE GUIDELINES.

2011-10-11_1048

New Subaru vehicles are thoroughly checked for quality and craftsmanship. Safety, performance, and dependability are given top priority, making the vehicles easy to operate and maintain.

The following information updates factory recommendations for the care and maintenance of new Subaru turbocharged vehicles.

THE TURBOCHARGER

The turbocharger, commonly called a “turbo,” is operated by the energy contained in the exhaust gas. The exhaust gas spins a turbine inside the turbocharger at an extremely high speed (more than 100,000 rpm). That compresses the air/fuel mixture into the cylinders, which creates higher power output.

Because of the turbine’s rotational speed and the high temperature of the exhaust gas driving the turbo, proper cooling is needed to maintain durability. Engine oil plays a major role in lubricating and cooling the turbo, so following recommended oil change guidelines is important.

The Subaru Genuine Oil Filter, available at your Subaru dealer, is the only filter that Subaru has tested to meet requirements for filtration and flow.

ENGINE OIL AND OIL FILTER

Proper turbocharge

r lubrication requires high-quality engine oil. Some oil cannot provide enough lubrication performance or durability when used in turbocharged engines. Poor-quality oil or oil not designed for turbo engines may cause damage to the turbocharger and other engine components. Consequently, it is critical to follow Subaru vehicle owner’s and service manuals for recommended oil grade and viscosity.

A second key component of the lubrication system is the oil filter. The Subaru Genuine Oil Filter, available at your Subaru dealer, is the only filter that Subaru has tested to meet requirements for filtration and flow. Aftermarket oil filters may have different filtration performance and relief-valve opening pressures, which could affect filter and engine operation. Subaru Genuine Oil Filters help ensure optimum engine and turbocharger performance.

ENGINE OIL AND OIL FILTER REPLACEMENT INTERVAL

Due to heat generated by the turbocharger and carbon deposits contained in exhaust gas, the oil in a turbocharged engine will deteriorate faster than the oil in a naturally aspirated engine. Therefore, special care should be taken to use the proper grade oil and to monitor oil deterioration.

Under normal driving conditions, the recommended oil and oil filter change interval for turbo vehicles is every 3,750 miles or four months, whichever comes first.

However, for vehicles driven in conditions beyond normal, such as racing conditions, the oil and oil filter may require more frequent changes.

RACING-TYPE DRIVING

Racing-type engine stress doesn’t only occur on the track. Racing-type driving takes place when the drivetrain, suspension, and other vehicle components are used at near peak capacity. Any driving where the engine speed is kept high – either by using lower gears at higher speeds or by employing engine braking – is considered racing-type driving.

Important: A “track day” or autocross event requires an oil and oil filter change immediately before and immediately after the event. Make sure to check other engine fluid levels as well.

ENGINE OIL LEVEL

Check the oil dipstick periodically to make sure the oil level is within proper range, which keeps the turbocharger properly lubricated and cooled. More frequent level checks are necessary especially when utilizing engine braking, because this increases the engine’s demand for lubrication.

Important: Allowing the engine oil level to drop by more than one quart may cause oil starvation, oil pump cavitation, and bearing damage. Over time, the cumulative effect will cause turbocharger and engine failure.

OIL CHANGES

Carbon deposits produced by a turbocharged engine can accumulate at the bottom of the oil pan. When changing the oil, always drain the oil through the oil drain plug hole on the oil pan. A vacuum draining device could leave carbon deposits in the oil pan and potentially contaminate the new oil.

FUEL REQUIREMENTS

Turbocharged Subaru engines are designed to operate on premium unleaded gasoline – 91-octane AKI or higher. This is essential for maximizing performance and is required for preventing possible engine damage.

MODIFICATIONS

Engine modifications such as, but not limited to, adding a boost pressure controller, using a non-genuine aftermarket air intake or exhaust system, changing the air bypass valve, “chipping,” etc., may negatively affect the warranty. Your Subaru dealer offers a line of Subaru Performance Tuning™ parts, which are designed and tested to Subaru standards and do not void the warranty.

YEARS OF DRIVING

With proper care as outlined above and in Subaru owner’s and service manuals, new Subaru vehicles will provide owners many years of driving enjoyment.

Love is Worth Waiting For...Reserve your 2012 Subaru Impreza right here!

Impreza News and Updates

Love is Worth Waiting For

The all-new 2012 Subaru Impreza is coming later in 2011. It features our legendary Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system, which gives it the capability to go just about anywhere. Under the hood, the 2012 Impreza is powered by an all-new SUBARU BOXER® engine, which not only sits low to improve handling, but it also makes it the most fuel-efficient All-Wheel Drive car in America at 36 MPG.* In true Subaru fashion, this car was designed from the ground up with the latest active and passive safety features in mind, with seven airbags, including an all-new knee protection system. Inside, it's pure Subaru too, with premium materials abound. There's even available leather-trimmed seating. The interior is bigger than the current car's, with more legroom in the back, and more shoulder room all around. And of course, it's filled with technology, including everything from an available GPS navigation system, to standard stability and traction control systems. Inside and out, it offers the ideal blend of safety, reliability, capability and value.

What sets the all-new Subaru Impreza apart?

It's a Subaru, so it offers the ideal combination of safety, reliability, capability, and value.
Read more about how the 2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i Premium compares to the competition.

Safety

The all-new Impreza is one of the safest vehicles we've ever built, and that means a lot, considering Subaru was the only manufacturer with every 2011 model named an IIHS Top Safety Pick. From its seven airbags, to its 4-wheel disc brakes with Brake Assist, to its VDC electronic stability control, it's loaded with active and passive safety features. Not to mention, it also has the traction of Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive to help you avoid accidents altogether.

Reliability

Down the road, you'll appreciate Subaru's long-standing reputation for dependability. In fact, 96% of all Subaru vehicles sold in the last 10 years are still on the road today.** This is in part thanks to the unique, naturally balanced design of our SUBARU BOXER® engines.

Capability

The 2012 Impreza features road gripping Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, which gives you peace of mind in any weather. Best of all, this added confidence doesn't come at the expense of fuel economy. The all-new SUBARU BOXER® engine gets 36 MPG* with a non-stop range of over 500 miles. Not only can it go farther, but it's also roomier. With 60/40-split flat-folding rear seats, and your choice of 4- or 5-door body styles, it's ready for any adventure.

Value

Our vehicles have always been known for their incredible value, so it's no wonder Subaru was just awarded the industry's highest predicted resale value by ALG and Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com.*** When you also consider the all-new Impreza's true cost of ownership, and low maintenance and fuel costs, it becomes an even better value.

Travel Safely. Pet Tips & How To's...

Make your pet travel experience fun and enjoyable by following these simple, common sense tips:

  • Safely secure your pet while traveling. An unrestrained pet can become a deadly projectile in the event of a sudden stop or crash, causing serious injury (even death) to passengers. For example, an unsecured, 25-pound dog in a 40 mph crash becomes a 1,000-pound mass (half a ton) flying uncontrollably inside the vehicle.
  • Dogs should be restrained with either a seatbelt or harness designed for pet travel. Smaller dogs can be secured in pet car seats, which allow them to also see out, while being properly restrained.
  • Never attach a restraining device to the pet's collar. Always use a harness to prevent injury.
  • Cats should be contained in a crate, cage or pet car seat that is secured with a seat belt. Never allow a cat to roam freely in the vehicle, as it could get tangled around the driver's feet or get in the driver's sight of the road.
  • Do not allow your pet to ride with its head outside of the window. An obstacle close to the vehicle could potentially strike your pet's head, causing injury or death, or dirt particles could get into your pet's ears, nose, eyes, or throat, causing health problems.
  • It's a good idea to stop every couple of hours for your pet and you to stretch and walk around. Be sure to have your pet's leash handy to have control and so your pet doesn't run away in unfamiliar surroundings.
  • Have your own supply of cold water, as fresh water is not always handy or convenient when you need to stop.
  • Have your pet consume small amounts of food and water, but don't allow to overeat or drink if you still have more traveling to do. Reserve your pet's main meal for the end of the day.
  • Leaving a pet in a parked car is never a good idea. Temperatures in confined spaces in the summer time can heat up fast, causing heatstroke ? even death ? to a pet. Extremely cold temperatures in the winter can be just as threatening, so be sure not to leave a pet in the car if the temperature is near the freezing mark.
  • A pet first-aid kit is an essential item to pack when venturing out and should contain things such as antiseptic cream, assorted bandages, tweezers, eye drops, gauge, tape, and the like. Phone numbers for your pet's vet, the National Animal Poison Control Center hotline (888-426-4435), and emergency pet hospitals in the areas where you plan to travel should be taken along.
  • A travel tag on a pet's collar will help someone locate you should you and your pet become separated. The travel tag should contain information about where you are staying locally (while away from home), including addresses and phone numbers. A cell phone number is also a good idea since most people have one with them, especially when they travel.

Subaru Pets Take Center Stage!

The Car Subaru is the proud sponsor of the Upper Valley  Humane Society. It's a natural fit - we are a pet-friendly dealership  and over 70% of Subaru  owners also own pets - more than any other manufacturer.  Subaru of America is a national  sponsor of the ASPCA, reflecting Subaru and their owners' active lifestyles, love of the outdoors, and community involvement.

Each year UVHS provides services to over 3,000 families across 100 communities in New Hampshire and Vermont.

UVHS has spent over 45 years setting the standard for a compassionate and humane community.  Our innovative and leading edge strategies have received national recognition from American Humane, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and the Humane Society of the United States.

We serve our communities at the forefront of a growing movement in animal welfare providing care and resources for companion animals and families.  For example, UVHS raised the bar for improving shelter animal outcomes by being first in New Hampshire to hire an on staff veterinarian specializing in shelter medicine.  In addition to improving animal health, spay/neuter of animals before adoption more effectively addresses animal overpopulation.

Each week we will feature a Pet of the Week.

Please consider adopting  a pet.

Subaru Facebook Fans Vote to Share Their Love with the Make-A-Wish Foundation®

Fans select charity to join four other nonprofits anticipated to receive a collective $5 million in donations from Subaru through fourth-annual Share The Love event

2011-10-04_1222

Cherry Hill, N.J., Sept. 20, 2011 -- Subaru of America, Inc. today announced its newest Share The Love charity beneficiary, the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

For the first time, Subaru invited Facebook fans to vote on a charitable organization for the automaker's fourth annual Share The Love event. After three weeks of voting, Facebook fans added the Make-A-Wish Foundation to a roster of charities anticipated to receive a collective $5 million in donations from Subaru. The Share The Love event, which donates $250 for every new Subaru vehicle sold or leased from Nov. 19 through Jan. 3, has donated nearly $15 million to charitable causes since the program's inception three years ago. The other recipient organizations that will benefit from this year's program include American Forests, the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®), Meals On Wheels Association of America, and Special Olympics.

"At Subaru, we support causes that our owners are also passionate about. This year we took the Share The Love event a step further and asked our Facebook fans to decide which organization they'd like to add to the designated charities for this year's event. We're absolutely delighted to welcome the Make-A-Wish Foundation as the People's Choice to join our existing charities," said Brian Johnson, national advertising manager, Subaru of America, Inc.

Bringing the "power of love" to the people
Facebook community members were given the exclusive opportunity to vote for their favorite charity through the Subaru of America Facebook page from Aug. 25 through Sept. 15. During the three-week period, the Make-A-Wish Foundation received the most votes, making the organization the People's Choice for the added charity.

"A Make-A-Wish® experience has the power to make a child with a life-threatening medical condition stronger and more optimistic, and the 'Share The Love' event offers a meaningful way to support our efforts to grant every eligible child a wish," said David Williams, president and chief executive officer of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America. "The Make-A-Wish Foundation thanks Subaru for this chance to make life better for more children and communities. We also are grateful for the incredible support that led to our selection."

2011 Share The Love Charitable Beneficiaries
With the addition of the newest charity, consumers who purchase or lease a Subaru vehicle during this year's event can designate the $250 Subaru donation to any of the following organizations:

  • American Forests: restores and protects rural and urban forests worldwide. It is the oldest national conservation nonprofit in the country and the only one focused exclusively on forests.
  • The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®): works to rescue animals from abuse, pass humane laws and share resources with shelters across the country.
  • Make-A-Wish Foundation: grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. It has granted more than 200,000 wishes in the United States since 1980.
  • Meals On Wheels Association of America: provides national leadership to end senior hunger, offering home-delivered-meal services to people in need.
  • Special Olympics: provides year-round sports and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

"We're proud to host the Share The Love event and we're happy to donate to our customers' favorite causes. With their help, and when this year's event comes to a close, we anticipate that Subaru will have donated nearly $20 million to deserving charities over the last four years. It just shows how much the power of love can do," Johnson added.
