Campout for Hunger - Philabundance

Close to one million people in the Delaware Valley alone face hunger every day. Philabundance, a food service organization based in the Pennsylvania/New Jersey area, is determined to make a change. During this year’s 93.3 WMMR’s annually sponsored event, Campout for Hunger, Philabundance smashed last year’s record!

This year, Subaru donated over 250,000 pounds of food during Campout for Hunger - that’s over 100 tons of food that Philabundance will distribute to emergency food kitchens, food cupboards, senior centers and more. This year’s total donations came to 576,000 pounds of food (that’s 22 trailers!), and we’re very proud we made such a huge contribution.

Take a listen to the audio below, featuring Subaru Philadelphia Zone Director Matt Ritter on WMMR as he announces the donation.

Control the road with symmetrical All-Wheel Drive!

Subarufor
You need balance and an even distribution of power for maximum traction, instead of the slip-then-grip alternative. Every Subaru comes standard with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive for better stability, efficiency and a quicker response to slippery conditions.

Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive standard on:
All Subaru Models

Efficiency and Durability

Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive has the engine mounted in-line with the drivetrain, helping provide a seamless transfer of power to all four wheels.

Other AWD systems need additional drivetrain components to route the same power to the wheels, often using complex designs. More components tend to reduce vehicle efficiency and could add to higher maintenance costs.

Stability and Control

The balanced design of Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive helps add control through uniform stability. With power being distributed to the wheels with the best traction, it helps you hold true to the path.

Front-wheel drive vehicles generally understeer or push in a turn, while rear-wheel drive vehicles can often oversteer in a turn.

Power and Traction

Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive sends power to all wheels simultaneously for maximum traction and acceleration.

In slippery conditions, that power instinctively flows to the wheels with the best traction.

Stronger roofs lead to another record year for award - Announcing winners of the 2012 Top Safety Pick

Iihs

The list of winners of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's Top Safety Pick award is longer than ever this year, with vehicles in nearly every size category the Institute evaluates earning accolades. From minicars to sedans to pickups, consumers have a record number of choices among 2012 models.

In all, 69 cars, 38 SUVs, 5 minivans, and 3 pickups earn Top Safety Pick. The award recognizes vehicles that do the best job of protecting people in front, side, rollover, and rear crashes based on ratings in Institute evaluations. The ratings, which cover all 4 of the most common kinds of crashes, help shoppers pick vehicles that offer the highest levels of crash protection. Because the federal government now requires all 2012 and later passenger vehicles to have electronic stability control to help drivers avoid loss-of-control crashes, ESC no longer is a requirement to win as it was in prior years.

The winners' circle includes 18 new recipients for 2012, while 97 models that previously qualified for the 2011 award carry over to 2012.

"For the second year running a record number of models qualify," says Institute president Adrian Lund. "It's tough to win, and we commend auto manufacturers for making safety a top priority."

That commitment to protecting people in crashes is evident in the fast pace of design improvements automakers have made during the past year. Initially 66 vehicles qualified for last year's award as less-than-perfect rollover ratings held back many contenders. Later the number climbed to 100 as manufacturers redesigned roofs to make them stronger or introduced new models to win. The Institute's rolling test schedule allows for recognition of additional winners throughout the year, so many 2012 models qualified for a 2011 Top Safety Pick.

Again this year every major automaker has at least one winner. Subaru remains the only manufacturer with the distinction of earning awards for every model it builds. Subaru picks up 5 awards, including one for the redesigned Impreza, a small car.

Toyota/Lexus/Scion has 15 winners for 2012, more than any other auto manufacturer. General Motors is next in line with 14, followed by Volkswagen/Audi with 13, and Ford/Lincoln and Honda/Acura with 12 awards apiece.

Honda improves: Ten of the 18 new additions are Honda/Acura models, including the midsize Accord sedan, which hasn't earned Top Safety Pick since the Institute toughened criteria to win the 2010 award by adding a test to assess roof strength in a rollover crash.

Vehicles rated good for rollover protection have roofs more than twice as strong as the current federal standard requires. The Institute estimates that such roofs reduce the risk of serious and fatal injury in single-vehicle rollovers by about 50 percent compared with roofs meeting the minimum requirement. A new federal standard for roof strength will phase in beginning with 2013 models.

Roofs on the 2009 Honda CR-V and 2010 Pilot scored marginal ratings in prior Institute tests, while earlier models of the Accord, CR-Z, Fit, and Insight rated acceptable. Now all of these 2012 models earn good ratings and Top Safety Pick.

"Honda/Acura deserves credit for most-improved status," Lund says. "The automaker buckled down and upgraded roofs on 10 models that missed winning last year because of rollover protection. Now, the automaker has winners in the minicar, small car, midsize car, small SUV, midsize SUV, minivan, and large pickup categories."

Another midsize sedan, the Toyota Camry, earns its first-ever Top Safety Pick. Last year, the Camry missed the mark because of a marginal rating for seat/head restraints. The Toyota Yaris also earns its first Top Safety Pick award. Toyota upgraded the roof and seat/head restraints of the 4-door hatchback model to win. Good ratings secure the Yaris a spot alongside 3 other minicars, the Fiat 500, Ford Fiesta, and Honda Fit, as 2012 winners.

"It's great to see the Accord and Camry, 2 of the top-selling midsize cars in the U.S. market, join the Top Safety Pick ranks this year," Lund says. "The Accord previously won the 2009 award but has been missing from the list since then."

With fuel efficiency and reduced emissions on many buyers' wish lists, the winners' circle includes more green choices. Toyota's all-new Prius v is among them. Roomier than the original, the v hybrid brings to 15 the number of winners available as hybrids. The plug-in electric Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf, winners in 2011, also earn this year's award.

For drivers who need to haul loads, the Ford F-150, Honda Ridgeline, and Toyota Tundra are good choices in the large pickup category. Small pickups continue to be shut out. None the Institute has evaluated qualify for the award.

"When we launched Top Safety Pick in 2005, consumers had 11 models to pick from. Six years later, finding a winner that fits most budgets and lifestyles is easy," Lund says. "It's a testament to the commitment automakers have made to going above and beyond minimum safety standards."

About the award: The Institute awarded the first Top Safety Pick to 2006 models and then raised the bar the next year by requiring good rear test results and ESC as either standard or optional equipment. In 2010, the Institute toughened criteria by adding a requirement that all qualifiers must earn a good rating for performance in a roof strength test to assess protection in a rollover crash.

The Institute groups winners according to vehicle type and size. Lund advises consumers to keep in mind that size and weight influence crashworthiness. Larger, heavier vehicles generally afford better occupant protection in serious crashes than smaller, lighter ones. Even with a Top Safety Pick, a small car isn't as crashworthy as a bigger one.

How vehicles are evaluated: The Institute's frontal crashworthiness evaluations are based on results of 40 mph frontal offset crash tests. Each vehicle's overall evaluation is based on measurements of intrusion into the occupant compartment, injury measures recorded on a 50th percentile male Hybrid III dummy in the driver seat, and analysis of slow-motion film to assess how well the restraint system controlled dummy movement during the test.

Side evaluations are based on performance in a crash test in which the side of a vehicle is struck by a barrier moving at 31 mph. The barrier represents the front end of a pickup or SUV. Ratings reflect injury measures recorded on 2 instrumented SID-IIs dummies representing a 5th percentile woman, assessment of head protection countermeasures, and the vehicle's structural performance during the impact.

In the roof strength test, a metal plate is pushed against 1 side of a roof at a displacement rate of 0.2 inch per second. To earn a good rating for rollover protection, the roof must withstand a force of 4 times the vehicle's weight before reaching 5 inches of crush. This is called a strength-to-weight ratio.

Rear crash protection is rated according to a 2-step procedure. Starting points for the ratings are measurements of head restraint geometry — the height of a restraint and its horizontal distance behind the back of the head of an average-size man.

Seat/head restraints with good or acceptable geometry are tested dynamically using a dummy that measures forces on the neck. This test simulates a collision in which a stationary vehicle is struck in the rear at 20 mph. Seats without good or acceptable geometry are rated poor overall because they can't be positioned to protect many people.

Talk about a road trip! On this day, 100 years ago, Amundsen became the first explorer to reach the South Pole.

Southpole
Norwegian Roald Amundsen becomes the first explorer to reach the South Pole, beating his British rival, Robert Falcon Scott.

Amundsen, born in Borge, near Oslo, in 1872, was one of the great figures in polar exploration. In 1897, he was first mate on a Belgian expedition that was the first ever to winter in the Antarctic. In 1903, he guided the 47-ton sloop Gjöa through the Northwest Passage and around the Canadian coast, the first navigator to accomplish the treacherous journey. Amundsen planned to be the first man to the North Pole, and he was about to embark in 1909 when he learned that the American Robert Peary had achieved the feat.

Amundsen completed his preparations and in June 1910 sailed instead for Antarctica, where the English explorer Robert F. Scott was also headed with the aim of reaching the South Pole. In early 1911, Amundsen sailed his ship into Antarctica's Bay of Whales and set up base camp 60 miles closer to the pole than Scott. In October, both explorers set off--Amundsen using sleigh dogs, and Scott employing Siberian motor sledges, Siberian ponies, and dogs. On December 14, 1911, Amundsen's expedition won the race to the Pole and returned safely to base camp in late January.

First Drive: 2013 Subaru BRZ

Subaru1
A couple of years ago we passed the point at which there were no more truly bad cars. If someone asked us, "Which car should we definitely avoid," it was hard to give a categorical answer. Sure, there were cars we didn't (and still don't) like, but no matter how personally averse we might be to even some current cars, we can't name one that's objectively awful.

Naturally, then, if everything is decent then the only place to go is... better. That's how you get to a brand like Subaru deciding to make a sports car and using, as a guide, the Porsche Cayman. And we do mean literal guide. During testing, Subaru engineers took a white Cayman on their international travels. We don't blame them. When the brief is to build "a pure handling sports car," where better to start than with the company that practically wrote and constantly revises the bible of handling, Porsche?

As a brief for a company like Subaru to have – a company not known for sports cars and that hasn't sold a two-wheel-drive car in the U.S. since the last millennium, which were front-wheel-drive wagons – that's impressive enough. What's more impressive is that they actually did it.

Your Monday Maintenance Tip: Air Filters

Fix2
What is it?

The air filter stops airborne contaminants from getting sucked into your car's engine. It's a paper filter that stops debris such as dust, leaves and wayward pelicans before they get inside the engine and do damage.

Should I do this service when it's recommended?

Yes.

Why do I have to do this?

Because, eventually, your air filter will get plugged up.

What happens if I don't do this?

If your air filter gets too dirty or clogged, your engine won't be able to suck enough air into the combustion chambers. The engine will then run rich (i.e., too much gas and not enough air). When this happens, your car will lose power and run roughly. Your Check Engine light also may come on.

If you really neglect the air filter for a long time, your car may stop running altogether. While permanent damage is unlikely, it is possible. If an air filter were sufficiently dirty and damaged, it could allow harmful, abrasive contaminants into the combustion chamber.

Subaru Advanced Tourer Concept Redefines Hybrid Wagons: 2011 Tokyo Auto Show

Tcs
Just the Facts:
  • Subaru hints at the future with its sensational hybrid wagon concept.
  • The Advanced Tourer Concept is an update of the 2009 Hybrid Tourer Concept.
  • The Advanced Tourer mates an electric motor with a turbocharged 1.6 direct-injection boxer engine.

TOKYO — Forget about the scissors-style front doors, the rear suicide doors and the all-glass panoramic roof. Subaru's Advanced Tourer Concept, unveiled here at the 2011 Tokyo Auto Show, is one hot-looking wagon that just might make it into production in 2014, without a few of the more eye-popping design details.

An update of Subaru's 2009 Hybrid Tourer Concept, the Advanced Tourer is sized between the Impreza and Outback wagons, with cutting-edge styling that is likely to spill over into the automaker's next crop of production cars.

Subaru said the concept was developed as a "new-generation sports wagon" under the theme Revolutionary Sports Tourer. Overall length is 180.3 inches, which makes the Advanced Tourer more than 6 inches longer than an Impreza wagon and 8 inches shorter than an Outback.

The revolutionary aspect may allude to the choice of driveline — an advanced hybrid system that combines an electric motor and a new turbocharged 1.6-liter version of Subaru's direct-injection four-cylinder boxer engine. Look for a production version of the hybrid powertrain to appear in other Subaru cars in 2013.

The concept also features all-wheel drive and Subaru's new Lineartronic continuously variable transmission, which the company describes as the world's first longitudinally mounted chain-drive CVT to be used in mass-produced AWD passenger cars.

Powered by a lithium-ion battery pack and linked to a brake regeneration system, the electric motor can be used exclusively during takeoff and at low speeds.

Other features include a monitor built into the steering wheel that enables access to navigation, video and Web-based apps, as well as an updated version of Subaru's EyeSight video warning system.

Subaru bringing more powerful WRX STI S206 to Tokyo

Subaru Tecnica International Inc. (STI)*1 is pleased to announce the launch of the SUBARU IMPREZA WRX STI "S206", special performance edition. The model will go on sale today through Subaru dealerships in Japan.

Based on the 4-door SUBARU IMPREZA WRX STI, S206 is the newest model in STI's "S" series. This series dons the crown of STI tuned cars with advanced driving performance and exclusively-made items in both interior and exterior designs. As with former STI models such as S204 and R205, S206 is founded on the IMPREZA WRX STI line.

In addition, "NBR CHALLENGE PACKAGE" model will be released to commemorate the class win*2 at 24 Hours Nürburgring endurance race held in June, with the addition of a carbon roof and original dry carbon rear spoiler. The exterior design incorporates racing car motifs and has an enhanced sporty feel.

Pre-orders for the "NBR CHALLENGE PACKAGE" have reached the limit for units available.

SUBARU IMPREZA WRX STI S206

S206's body and engine were tuned to perform as expected of STI's best model. The body employs exclusive Bilstein shock absorbers, STI coil springs, a flexible tower bar (front), and a flexible draw stiffener (front). While improving straight-driving performance, motion is steadied when going into corners so that precise and quick turning is possible. Plus, "Michelin Pilot Super Sport" tires provide refined driving comfort in combination with
"BBS" 19-inch aluminum wheels made only for this model.

In the exclusively-made engine, the weight balance between piston, connecting rod, and crankshaft is optimized to enhance the rev feel. Along with a ball bearing turbocharger, ECU (Engine Control Unit) with STI tuning, and a sports muffler with lowered back pressure exhaust - all of which were designed for this model - the engine can deliver 235kW (320PS) in maximum output and 431N.m (44kg.m) in maximum torque. The accelerator response is heightened and low to mid range torque increased, thereby offering better driveability.

On the outside, the lower front spoiler and front fender outlet grille, both designed for this model, and the trunk spoiler are among its distinctive features. The newly-made front grille and side garnishes were also employed for aerodynamics improvement and a high grade appearance.

In the interior are exclusively-made items such as a genuine leather-wrapped steering wheel, "RECARO" racing bucket seats, and seatbelts. Together they create a refined appearance and feel, appropriate for this flagship model.

ALG “Subaru continues to draw fiercely loyal devotees who appreciate the brand’s strong quality and ability to remain practical yet progressive.”
• Subaru of America earns third-consecutive Best Mainstream Brand title
• 2012 Subaru Outback is three-peat winner in midsize utility segment
• 2012 Subaru Legacy snags honors in midsize car segment

Subaru of America today announced that it has received three Residual Value Awards from ALG , the industry benchmark for residual values and depreciation data, The ALG Residual Value Awards recognize annually the vehicles predicted to retain the highest percentage of original price after a three-year period.
The company claimed the title of Best Mainstream Brand for the third year in a row. Subaru also earned Best Midsize Utility Vehicle and Best Midsize Car nods for 2012 Subaru Outback and 2012 Subaru Legacy, respectively. Award winners are determined through careful study of the competition in each segment, historical vehicle performance and industry trends. Vehicle quality, production levels relative to demand, and pricing and marketing strategies remain the key factors that affect ALG’s residual value forecasts.
“The Legacy’s standard all-wheel drive, above-average fuel economy and spacious interior appeal to a wide swath of the market, helping to keep demand high,” said Raj Sundaram, for ALG. “With the brawny new generation of Outback, Subaru continues to
build on its reputation for delivering what consumers want in a crossover, the handling of a car with great utility and roomy interiors.”
“Subaru is proud to be recognized as a brand that builds safe and reliable vehicles that deliver on our mobility promises and retain value for our owners,” said Thomas J. Doll, executive vice president and chief operating officer, Subaru of America, Inc. “We are honored to have, again, received ALG Residual Value Awards for our brand and two of our popular Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive vehicles.”
Of the Best Mainstream Brand win, ALG’s Sundaram remarked: “Subaru continues to draw fiercely loyal devotees who appreciate the brand’s strong quality and ability to remain practical yet progressive in its redesigns. Dependably low incentives and fleet sales have also enhanced its used market image, helping it to retain the top spot for mainstream brand for the third year in a row.”

“SUBARU BRZ CONCEPT - STI -” to Debut at Los Angeles Auto Show

Subaroo
Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI), the maker of Subaru automobiles, today unveiled the world premiere of “SUBARU BRZ CONCEPT - STI -” at the 2011 Los Angeles International Auto Show. (Press days on November 16 and 17. Open to public from November 18 to 27 in US)

The “SUBARU BRZ CONCEPT - STI -” is a concept car based on the “SUBARU BRZ”, an all-new rear-wheel drive (RWD) compact sports car developed from an ongoing joint-project between Subaru and Toyota Motor Corporation. By making full use of the Horizontally-Opposed Boxer, Subaru’s core technology, this concept car further pursued a "Pure Handling Delight" driving experience that can be realized by the Boxer engine’s low center of gravity. Combined with motifs of Subaru’s iconic performance brand “STI”, the concept car embodies an ultimate handling performance and symbolizes the possibilities the SUBARU BRZ holds for the future.

<Styling>
• By installing the Boxer engine as low as possible, the low hood and sleek roofline together compose a sophisticated form. This is also blended with STI performance touches for a Subaru sporting profile.
• A hexagonal lower front grille, hawk eye headlights and fin-shaped fog lamps make the front face instantly recognizable as Subaru.
• STI-made lower front spoiler and rear wing magnify down-force and aerodynamics performance. They allow stable straight driving and excellent handling at high speeds.
• The rear design with bold rear fender flares, large rear-diffuser, and twin dual tailpipes intensifies the STI performance feel.
• A carbon-fiber roof, already installed in a WRX STI model and highly acclaimed, has been employed by the concept car. With it, extra weight reduction and an even lower center of gravity were achieved, contributing considerably to the ultimate handling performance this concept model aims to offer.
• The lively exterior color “WR Blue Pearl II” is a new generation of the iconic WR blue paint scheme that emphasizes the racing image.

<Engine>
• The Boxer engine has inherent qualities of light weight, compactness, low center of gravity, and high rigidity – all pointing toward its great potential as a sports car engine. Taking full advantage of these features, a 2.0-liter horizontally-opposed four-cylinder direct fuel-injection gasoline engine has been developed exclusively for BRZ.
• The engine has been designed with a square bore and stroke of 86 X 86 mm. Combined with Toyota’s D-4S direct injection technology (fuel injection system), high output and high environmental standards were both attained, both expected of a new generation sports car.

<Chassis and Body>
• Compared with other Subaru models, the engine in SUBARU BRZ CONCEPT - STI - sits an impressive 120 mm lower and is positioned 240 mm closer to the center of the chassis. As a result, this car has achieved one of the lowest possible center of gravity in cars on the market today.
• By incorporating lightweight parts such as a carbon-fiber roof, the overall weight has been reduced. Subaru has also succeeded in attaining a body structure that is both lightweight and highly rigid in a striking balance. The concept car is the embodiment of pure driving enjoyment only obtainable with a “Boxer sports car”.
• Its unique handling performance has been remarkably refined by adopting STI’s lightweight 18-inch alloy wheels with performance tires and STI tuned suspension with excellent lateral stiffness.
• Brembo brakes enhance braking performance.

Are your tires on the right track for winter driving? Come see us for big savings this weekend!

Tcs

Snow tires, also known as “winter tires” and “ice tires,” are tires that have been designed and manufactured specifically to perform well under winter conditions. Winter tires are different from other tires in both their tread and the kind of rubber that they are made of. The rubber that is used to create winter tires is softer than tires that are used in summer conditions. The softer rubber grips ice and snow better than other tires and does not harden in cold conditions. This means when it’s cold Winter tires will grip the road better even in clear, dry conditions.

The tread on snow tires is also much different than the tread on other types of tires. First of all, Winter tires have more grooves than most others. Like the soft rubber, these grooves also help the tires to grip snowy and icy roads.

Main Exibits

◆SUBARU ADVANCED TOURER CONCEPT (Concept car)
1. Concept
Exquisitely balancing the enjoyment of driving with environmental friendliness, the car, under its product concept of "Revolutionary Sports Tourer", embodies Subaru's theme of "Confidence in Motion". This C-segment class car was developed as a new-generation sports wagon providing both superior driving performance and utility. It features an innovative exterior design not found in conventional wagon models and expert wagon utility Subaru has cultivated over the years.

The well established sports power unit, the Horizontally-Opposed Subaru Boxer engine, is now with direct fuel injection. This highlight mixed with Subaru's downsizing concept and original Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) expertise has enabled Subaru to make considerate progress on its unique Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD) technology. An even sportier drivability and advanced environmental friendliness are both attainable in this new concept car.

2. Design and Packaging
< Exterior Design >
• Subaru's brand statement "Confidence in Motion" is portrayed in the outward design as well. The dynamic yet sleek look promises an enthusiastic drive, while the cabin offers all the usability of a C-segment wagon.
• A flowing line on the side surfaces augments the stylish design calling to mind a coupe style car.

< Interior Design >
• In pursuit of Subaru's human-centered philosophy, all passengers are assured a safe and pleasant ride in a comfortable and quality interior.
• An entire roof made of glass adds to the spacious feel. Various textures such as wood and metal are incorporated into the inside layout to produce ample ambiance.
• A large monitor is built into the steering wheel allowing access to maps, television and internet services.
Information will be available at hand to support contemporary lifestyles even in the car.

3. Mechanisms
(1) Next-Generation Power Unit System
- Downsized direct fuel injection turbo engine -
• The downsized direct fuel injection turbo engine is one of the principal technologies that will guide Subaru's engine strategy in the future. Not only is acceleration quick and smooth with the new-generation Horizontally-Opposed engine, it is environmentally friendly. The direct fuel injection system which injects necessary amounts of fuel into the cylinders at appropriate moments, and a turbo system which efficiently supplies large amounts of air into the cylinders, along with the downsizing of current turbo engine displacements (2,500cc and 2,000cc) to 1,600cc drastically improve combustion efficiency at practical driving-speed range compared to the existing turbo engine.

- High torque compatible Lineartronic (CVT) -
• Lineartronic is Subaru's continuously variable transmission device designed for the new era. It is the world's first longitudinally-mounted chain drive CVT to be utilized in mass-produced AWD passenger cars. For the concept car, the Lineartronic was refined to satisfy the high-power output turbo engine.

- Hybrid system -
• Subaru's original hybrid system has been developed to harmonize with the Symmetrical AWD
technology, another one of its specialties, and to further enhance its appeal. A single motor system was employed for its simple structure and light weight.
• This system has an Electric Vehicle (EV) mode which allows AWD motion using only the motor at start-ups and low-speed drives. When decelerating, the regenerating mechanism uses the motor as a power generator.

(2) EyeSight
Subaru's advanced driving assist system EyeSight (Version 2), well received since its release in May 2010, has made further progress. The recognition range of the stereo camera has expanded considerably, both in width and depth.

Subaru to Show Production BRZ, Next-Gen Hybrid Concept

2011 Tokyo Motor Show

Tcs1

TOKYO -- Subaru will introduce the production version of its BRZ rear-wheel-drive sporty car as well as an updated vision for its hybrid due in 2013 at this month's Tokyo Motor Show.

Subaru released only a headlamp teaser shot of the closely guarded BRZ -- a project developed jointly with Toyota Motor Corp. It shows Subaru's typical hexagonal grille.

But the Japanese also surrendered new specs. The car is scheduled to go on sale in Japan in the spring and then head to North America, which Subaru expects to be the model's biggest market.

The BRZ will get a new, 2.0-liter, four-cylinder horizontally opposed engine.

It will be based on the company's third-generation FB engine that appeared last fall, but it will have cylinders with wider and shorter bores to provide more power. It will also be the first Subaru equipped with direct fuel injection, a system borrowed from Toyota.

The engine will be teamed with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. And the car will get a double wishbone rear suspension.

Other specs: Overall length of 4,240 inches, width of 70 inches and height of 51 inches. The BRZ will ride on a wheel base of 101 inches.)

Tcs11
Also making its world debut in Tokyo will be the Advanced Tourer Concept, Subaru's latest vision for its first hybrid vehicle, a car expected in 2013 and also based on Toyota technology.

This car takes Subaru in a new direction.

It gets a downsized 1.6-liter, turbo-charged, direct-injection engine teamed with a hybrid electric motor system and Subaru's latest continuously variable transmission. It will also be fitted with regenerative braking from all four wheels that can recharge the vehicle's lithium ion battery.

Subaru wants the technology to provide a 50 percent increase in fuel efficiency compared with current models. And keeping with Subaru's image for rugged rides, it will also be all-wheel drive.

The Tourer is envisioned as running in electric-only AWD mode, but the company didn't give a driving range. The concept puts flesh on Subaru's plan to enter the hybrid market.

Press days for the Tokyo Motor Show are Nov. 30 to Dec. 1.
